Airplane Design Plan Questions


Answers should be in detailed, complete sentences! (You can copy and paste these questions onto a Google Doc and answer between them! Call it “Airplane Design Plan Questions” and share it with jbarber@k12albemarle.org IMMEDIATELY!)

1. What were your design requirements (measurements, materials/tools)? (2pts.)


2. What were your time/equipment/financial constraints? (2pts.)


3. Background research: What types of background research did you do? Where did you get your information? What sources (websites) did you use? What components of the design were you researching and why? After your sentence, list as many exact URLs as you can! (2pts.)


4. What roadblocks did you run into? How did you remedy (fix) this? Explain as much as you can about how you have adapted/iterated (10 pt paragraph -- needs at LEAST 5 sentences)


5. Upload as many pictures of your build/process as you can. (2 pts. each)



These are ENGINEERING HABITS OF MIND. (Find the question after the list.)
  • Collaboration- Collaboration in the engineering educational environment is heralded in how it “leverages the perspectives, knowledge, and capabilities of team members to address a design challenge”
  • Optimism-“a worldview in which possibilities and opportunities can be found in every challenge and an understanding that technology can be improved” 
  • Communication-take turns in speaking, listen closely to one another, and search for appropriate vocabulary to articulate what they desired to convey
  • Attention to ethical consideration-ethics demanded respecting each other’s safety, ideas, materials, and space, For instance brainstorming ideas about how to safely carry, cut, and construct
  • A systems - thinking approach - Seeing whole, systems and parts, and how they connect, pattern-sniffing, recognising interdependencies, synthesising Systems thinking involves “the ability to recognize interconnections in the technological world” 
  • Problem finding-Clarifying needs, checking existing solutions, investigating contexts, verifying 
  • Visualising-Move from abstract to concrete, manipulating materials, mental rehearsal of physical space and of practical design solutions 
  • Improving-Relentlessly trying to make things better by experimenting, designing, sketching, guessing, conjecturing, thought-experimenting, prototyping 
  • Creative problem solving-Applying techniques from other traditions, generating ideas and solutions with others, generous but rigorous critiquing, seeing engineering as a “team sport” 
  • Adapting-Testing, analysing, reflecting, re-thinking, changing (physically and mentally)

THREE MAJOR AIRPLANE GRADES:
  • AIRPLANE DESIGN PLAN QUESTIONS (26 pts): This grade will be out of 26 points with a MAXIMUM of 27 points. Make SURE that you have been as detailed as possible and use complete sentences for every answer, except the pictures on #5, & #7! (We need to adapt your answers into a paragraph and put your pics, videos and your paragraph on your website/portfolio. This will be for a separate grade)
  • AVIATION WEBPAGE (30 pts): Using your answers, let’s create a detailed paragraph to put with all your pics and videos onto a new page of your website portfolio.
  • AIRPLANE BUILD (30 pts): Finally, you will be meeting face-to-face with Julian and/or me to assess your airplane build. Grades will be based on:
    • Working independently and asking important questions, 
    • collaborating with your team and helping each other, 
    • knowing the video well and using Flite-Test’s experts to help you
    • Your understanding of how your airplane works, control panels, etc.
